How the ketogenic diet (KGD) works

In ancient times, people would fast to rid themselves of seizures. The KGD mimics this state of fasting but, under the careful supervision of a physician and/or qualified dietician, ensures that the body's nutritional and caloric needs are constantly met.

The human body normally burns glucose in the form of carbohydrates for energy. On the ketogenic diet, the body burns fat for energy. When the fat is burned, ketones are produced in the body. The actual mechanism that results in seizure control is not fully understood, but we do know that this state of ketosis can be an extremely powerful anti-epileptic for some children and adults. ¨
