Protective
helmets
Some types of seizures such
as
myoclonic-astatic (or any type of drop attacks)
or
tonic-clonic seizures may result in your child falling to the floor
without warning putting them at risk of injury. If such events occur frequently, you might
consider a protective helmet, especially when playing outside.
Protective helmets can be made to order according to the seizure
type experienced. Here is an example of a helmet made for a
child who mainly experienced tonic-clonics, and was prone to
falling backwards.
For seizures that tend to involve falling forward, a face guard
is often necessary.
Some parents find that soccer, or hockey type helmets are
useful, and more socially acceptable when playing outdoors. The
martial arts-style helmets are also useful as they are
lightweight, waterproof, and available in a choice of colours.
Face and chin guards are also available for these helmets.
Sports helmets such as hockey and bike helmets may be quite
heavy and uncomfortable,
and it is important to note that they are not specifically designed for protection in the event of a seizure.
Your
local epilepsy organisation or hospital will have a list of
recommended protective helmet suppliers in your locality. The
helmet pictured here (left) is from
www.macho.com. They
have many different styles, as well as chin or face guards
available. Here are some other links to helmet suppliers:
